"Prior to joining Covance, I worked in the critical care unit providing care to patients with multiple trauma injuries. I came to Covance because I've always had an interest in research. Earlier in my career, I was involved in collecting data for study investigators. The desire to learn Phase I research made the Covance opportunity an obvious choice over research in a hospital setting.
A typical day at Covance is full of varied tasks and responsibilities—this is what makes the job interesting and fun! All of the staff are cross-trained to perform all study procedures. My daily responsibilities may include performing ECGs, taking vital signs, drawing blood, collecting lab specimens, processing specimens, or serving meals.
The most important aspect of the job is monitoring the health and safety of our study participants. Each day, I interact with our study participants, doctors, study managers and coordinators, operating supervisors, and other staff members. In addition to working as a staff nurse on the unit, I also provide training to new employees."

"I started looking for a job when my husband and I wanted to move closer to family. I looked at some hospital jobs but knew the hospital was not where I really wanted to work long-term. Covance offered a different type of nursing job than a hospital—and it was the exact change I was looking for!"

"A new nurse at the clinical research unit would start as a staff nurse and would receive training on tasks necessary to run a study (vital signs, ECGs, blood draws, dosing and safety monitoring). A nurse interested in other opportunities could move into a supervisor role, project manager or coordinator, or have more involvement in setting up studies."
